Here’s a quick guide to the notation system used in Svara Collective.

There are two primary notation systems used in Hindustani classical music:

  • Bhatkhande system
  • Paluskar system.

SvaraCollective uses the Bhatkhande system with a few modifications.

Number of notes:

37 notes or swaras can be displayed. In other words, 3 octaves of 12 notes each plus one.

Shuddha Swaras:

A Shuddha swara is represented by the note label.

In English:

Shuddha Sa Shuddha Re Shuddha Ga

In Hindi:

Shuddha Sa Shuddha Re Shuddha Ga

Komal Swaras:

A Komal swara is represented by an underline symbol below the note label. In English:

Komal Re Komal Ga Komal dha Komal ni

In Hindi:

Komal Re Komal Ga Komal dha Komal ni

Tivra Swaras

Represented by a vertical line symbol above the note label.

In English:

Tivram ma

In Hindi:

Tivram ma

Octave

The notation system is capable of representing 3 octaves: lower, middle and high.

  • The lower octave is represented by a dot symbol below the note label,
  • The higher octave by a dot above.

Beat/Tempo

Since Svara Collective synchonized with the beat in the video, it does not show beat information.
